Carnival fever in Basel!

February 27 to 29, 2012

The "Morgenstreich" is a truly unique event. This begins very early on a Monday morning, at precisely 4 a.m. All the lights in the city are switched off - and the night is illuminated solely by the serried lanterns of the so-called "Cliquen" (carnival associations). Queen carnival takes the sceptre in her hand. For the next three days the city abandons itself to wild revelry - accompanied by the sound of thousands of piccolos and drums. On Monday and Wednesday afternoon the innumerable Cliques come together to form the "Cortège" (procession), during which they present their witty and satirical analyses of the events of the past year. In addition to the floats, so-called "Guggemusiken" (boisterous brass bands), which have become increasingly popular in recent decades, also present their own subjects in the procession. On Monday and Wednesday evening, over 60 so-called "Schnitzelbank" groups of satirists parade through the city restaurants. These too present verses (in Basel-German dialect) about the events of the past twelve months, accompanied by songs and music. Tuesday is reserved for children and the children's carnival. In the evening, the Guggenmusiken and the dazzling display of lanterns at Münsterplatz takes centre stage. For established aficionados of the Basel carnival, active and passive alike, one of the most attractive events (along with the Morgenstreich) is the "Gässle". This entails, quite simply, accompanying the Cliques or "Schyssdräggziigli" (small groups) of piccolo and drum players as they wend their way, at a leisurely pace, through the alleys and backstreets of the Old Town.
